MP’s Sunday

Joyce Murray’s Last Snowy Parade?

By Carol Volkart

Spare a thought for the politicians of this world, whose jobs require constant face time with the public. While most of us were still tucked up cozily out of Sunday morning’s snowstorm, our MP Joyce Murray was in the thick of it, celebrating the Year of the Snake at the 51st Annual Spring Festival Parade in Chinatown.

Vancouver Quadra’s Member of Parliament Joyce Murray does her bit in Chinatown on Sunday at a parade celebrating the start of the Lunar New Year.

She had lots of company braving the snowflakes. My partner John Denniston, whose news photography background won’t let him pass up events like these, wondered what the fuss was about an ordinary-looking man who seemed to be in high demand for selfies. John didn’t recognize Pierre Poilievre without the glasses that used to define him, but yes, it was the federal Conservative leader himself.

B.C. Premier David Eby was also out there, but drawing far less attention.

As for Joyce Murray, she may have been contemplating future cozy mornings without obligations like morning parades. After representing Vancouver Quadra since 2008, the former fisheries minister announced in 2023 that she won’t be running in this year’s federal election.
